Level Up

I was expecting him to break up with me, but it still hurt. I thought it would happen sometime later, not so soon.

“See, I told you, people leave”, I thought to myself, as I sat in the tent, completely void of any feeling.

Within a couple of minutes, he came back inside with ramen and sprite.

“Here, I made this for dinner”, he said and sat across from me with his arms folded. He was still bugged.

“I thought you broke up with me”, I said, surprise in my voice as I stared at the food in front of me.

“I was just leaving the tent to make dinner, I’m never leaving you”, he snapped back.

But that sentence made be so happy within. Even though this was a rotten fight, he could still say that.

I quietly closed the distance between us and sat across his lap. He wrapped his arms around me, but he didn’t look at my face.

I looped my arms around the back of his neck and rested my head on his chest.

“I’m sorry for saying that earlier”, I said while fiddling with the top button of his shirt.

“I know you’ll never cheat on me”

“Let me in Kenzie”, he sighed and kissed my forehead.

“Hmm?”

“Tell me everything…”

“Like?”

“I want to know everything about you. Whenever I ask you anything, you turn the question on me. I play along because I want you to tell me about your life when you are ready. You know everything about me, but I know just snippets about you. I want the entire story.”

“Why?”

“Because I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I want to take care of you and protect you from anything and everything.”

Tears started rolling down my cheeks.

“Mackenzie, Kenzie?! Don’t cry, I’m sorry. I’m sorry I yelled at you and walked away”, he said, wiping away my tears. Tears started to well up in his eyes.

“You saying that you are not leaving me, that made my life.”

I started sobbing.

“Kenzie, please don’t cry”, he said, his voice breaking.

“I love you Min-Min and I’ll tell you everything”

“Tell me when you’re ready, I’m sorry for pressurizing you…”

“NO, I want to tell you everything right now” I said.

He looked at me with an expression that touched my heart. He seemed elated to know that I trusted him enough to open up to him.

So, that night, I let him in on every aspect of my life. Not once did he judge me but took my side every single time. He agreed on every single choice I made, he was in my corner, no matter what.

I must’ve fallen asleep while talking to Min because when I opened my eyes, I was tucked in on our bed. As I looked out the window, it was still dark outside, so I assumed it was still night time. Min was fast asleep next to me.

I snuggled up against his side and rested my head on his outstretched arm. He immediately turned and hugged me.

Something had changed between us. A change that put an invisible seal on our relationship. We levelled up.

Fight Or Flight

I had just logged out from work and shut down my laptop. It was still a work from home situation, but one I had not expected. Several months ago, I had come to South Korea for a holiday. It was supposed to be a two-week vacation. The plan – spend a week at Lake 192…
