It was official – Minseok and I are getting married. At least it was official between the two of us. We did not want to break the news to our families just yet. But we were ready to meet them as a couple.
The last time I spoke to my mother and sisters, Minseok joined in too. I gave them a heads up a week before the call. I had to make sure they were cool on the call and got over the awkwardness before actually talking to him.
It went better than I expected. They were at ease speaking to each. I was happy that they were comfortable on the call. But I spared them one little detail – that we lived together. The story – he lives in Seoul and spends his days off here. The same story was known to Minseok’s family too.
And today, he was bringing over his Mother for lunch. Surprisingly, I wasn’t nervous. With all the shit that has happened in life, I did not have the capacity to be nervous. I decided to just be me. And if she liked me that would be awesome.
At around 12pm, Minseok pulled up into the driveway. Benjamin and Whiskey ran up to greet him and I walked over too. His Mum stepped out of the car and was greeted by our puppies. And I walked up to her.
“Hi Aunty, I’m Mackenzie”, I said and put out my hand for a handshake.
“Hi Kenzie!”, she smiled and pulled me in for a warm hug. The sudden hug reminded me of my mother’s hug. *missing mommy*
“You’re gorgeous”, she said as she placed her hands on either side of my arms and looked at my face smiling.
I blushed.
“Yup, she is”, Minseok said awkwardly.
“Aren’t you two going to greet each other?”, she asked looking at Min.
So he walked over and patted my head while I patted his shoulder.
“My gosh, stop being so awkward you two. Come, let’s go”
“Yup”, I said and she held my hand. I was my awkward self. But she was cool with it.
After we entered the house, the three of us had a glass of sprite to cool down. And then, I took her for a little house tour. (Min and I had made sure none of his belongings were visible in the house. All his stuff was either hidden in the closet or stuffed at the back of the cabinets *phew*)
After that, we sat at the picnic table for lunch. I had cooked Chilly chicken and Pulav. And for the veg dish – boiled cauliflower with pepper, salt and chillies. While Min’s mom was seated at the picnic table, our puppies kept her company.
Min and I headed inside to the kitchen to get the dishes out. The minute we were in the house, Min hurriedly pushed me into the kitchen in a little space between the fridge and the kitchen counter, hidden away from sight.
He spun me around so that I was facing him and he pinned me against the wall. I was so confused as his face was unreadable. It seemed like his eyes were brimming with tears. He stared at me for a couple of seconds and without a warning, he crushed his lips on mine.
It was just a peck on the lips but he held it for a while and I could feel the emotion in the kiss. I could sense him restrain himself as his lips quivered against mine. When he pulled away, he was smiling.
“Min, what happened”, I whispered.
“I love you Kinzie”, he said and this time his kiss was a bit relaxed. *muah*
But it was a mini make-out session. We were brought out of this sudden frenzy by our barking puppies. Luckily, I was not wearing lipstick, just a light Chapstick. So, there would be no sign of what just happened.
We then carried on with taking lunch out to the picnic table. It was a fun afternoon. And I think Minseok’s mother genuinely likes me, at least time will tell. But one thing was for sure – I genuinely like his mother. And now I miss my mommy.
